The celebrated this year 500 anniversary of birth of Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski the greatest Polish political writer of the Renaissance, Polish Post has commemorated by the issue of a post stamp. The stamp presenting the effigy of the writer has been printed in the noble technique of steel engraving.

Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski / 1503 - 1572/ an outstanding publicist, social reformer, moralist and theologian was one of the pioneer of the modern European science about state and law. In his most important work "About the improvement of the Republic" he has conducted a shrewd analysis of the politico-social system of Poland of those days and has presented a program of its reconstruction. He postulated among other things cancellation of the villain service, equal footing of the citizens towards the law, secularization of the education, he was condemning invading war, he was demanding religious tolerance and the independence of the catholic church from Rome.

In the late years of his life being attacked as a heretic he came closer to the Calvinist thinking and especially the Arian ideas. In the posthumous issued debate "Silva equator" he has strongly criticised the Feudal relations in the Church. He was closed to the opinions of Erazm from Rotterdam and especially the principle of Irenism, which mean peace and concord between religions.

On the accompanying the stamp FDC is presented a fragment of the title page of the work "About the improvement of the Republic".

On the date of introduction of the stamp into circulation will be in use at the Post Office Warszawa 1 a special cancellation, in which are presented the facsimile of the signatures of Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski.

Taking the subject of Easter on the post stamps Polish Post has taken the traditional folk presentations of Christ in sculptures as Christ Anxious and Christ Vanquisher. The figure of Christ Anxious shows Jesus Christ meditating in a sitting position with the head propped on hand. Then the sculpture of Christ Vanquisher shows the standing figure of Christ Resurrected with the right hand risen in the gesture of blessing and the cross propped on the earth. Deep religious feelings, seized in a simple sculptural or painting form were being shown by numerous generations of folk creators already since the first half of the XIX century.

A particular attention should be paid to the presentation of Christ Anxious who is a symbol of Polish folk art. The figure of Christ Anxious is a mystique reflection of body and soul sufferings of the Redeemer calling to follow his spiritual comportment. There is a thematically relation with the torment of Christ and his anxious posture expressing the grief of seclusion and fear of an inevitable death.

The dramatic notion of Christ Anxious has gained a particular popularity among simple folk. The figure of Christ expresses therefore compassion and helps to survive evil and violence of the world. With the time passing this figure of Christ Anxious settled at the cross-roads became only a picturesque component of the Polish landscape.

So Easter is becoming for the majority of us only a part of a tradition and an occasion to meet our closest people. The events of Easter Night are bringing every year nearer the secret of Redemption and are an inspiration for a more profound consideration. They are the icons of the pain of the terrestrial life and hope which the same as to our ancestors enlightens us to-day the substance of the man's existence.

On the day of introduction of the stamps with the face value 2. 10 PLN into circulation /Christ Vanquisher/ and 1. 20 PLN /Christ Anxious/ will be in sales also an FDC with special cancellation in use at the Post Office Warszawa 1.

The words of Jesus Christ Go and proclaim Gospel to the whole world, to which John Paul II called at the beginning of his pontificate, have been during the next five years the determinant of His Pope mission.

The Pope - Pilgrim addresses himself to all people, irrespective of the religion, with the same universal message: love, brotherhood and peace. In a world were common is relativism John Paul II is one of the few moral authority. To them addresses the Pope the words full of hope - don't be afraid.

The European Union is an extraordinary achievement. It is a result of a process of a voluntary political and economical integration between European states. Somewhat a kind of the preunification of Europe is considered by some the antique Roman Empire and in the Middle Ages the empire of Charles the Great. With the difference however to the nowadays Union they were not communities of free states and nations but empires created through conquests.

The experiences of the Second World War caused that new forms of international cooperation have been sought, forms that would secure peace and security on the European continent. One of the propagator of the unification of Europe was Winston Churchill, who in the famous declaration delivered on the 19th of September 1946 at the University of Zurich stipulated the creation - of the United States of Europe.

Polish aspirations to the membership in the European Union in a natural way are arising from our history and identity. Though the verdict of the history brought a situation that we have not been able on equal statute together with other nations to create the contemporary Europe still thanks to poets and scientists, artists and thinkers we have always been a part of the European house.

The presented to you post stamps are in its way a documentation of important stages marking the Polish way to the European Union and the augury of the expecting us in the current year events:

  • The first stamp commemorates the process of the access negotiations that Poland has started on the 31st of March 1998 in Brussels and has ended during the European Union summit in Copenhagen in the days 13 and 14 December 2002.
  • The second of the stamps is commemorated to the signature by Poland of the Accession Treaty which according to the schedule should take place on the 16th of April 2003 in Athens.
  • The third stamp concerns the referendum during which the Polish society must express its opinion concerning the integration with European Union. Having in mind the still being carried on discussion on the date of the carrying on of the referendum the presented on the project of the stamp date can be changed.

On the day of introduction of the stamps into circulation will be in sales an FDC with special cancellation in use at the Post Office Warszawa 1. Director of the Office of Post Services

Last year Polish Post has started an issue of a new series of stamps in circulation entitled "Polish Cities", which aim is to present the architecture and the landscape of the most beautiful and oldest Polish cities. Naturally among the stamps of this series can not be missing the stamp presenting Torun - a town enchanting with its beautiful architecture, picturesquely situated on the Vistula river, called not without reason "Venice of the North". The qualities of this town has been appreciated also contemporary by placing the Old Town Complex of Torun on the list of the World Heritage of Culture and Nature of UNESCO.

Torun is famous for his unique Gothic apartment houses, splendid granaries and churches, the Old Town City Hall and the Slanting Tower. To the town adds lustre the fact that the great astronomer Nicolas Copernicus was born here. The tourists can admire his house and the museum which is him dedicated.

The specific, full of weirdness climate of the town is created not only by the monuments and the palpable on each step breath of the history but also by numerous myths and legends like: "About the rafter from Torun", "About the cat who has been defending the gates of the town", "About the cook Jordan", "About the honey-cake baker and his daughter Catherine". And speaking about honey-cakes, their taste let us understand what means the saying "heaven in mouth".

The presented stamp can not give away the qualities of the honey-cake from Torun, it shows however the most characteristic monuments of the town: the monument of Nicolas Copernicus and the Gothic towers of the Old Town City Hall. On the FDC adjoining this stamp can man see a fragment of the inside of the nave in St. Jacob church.

On the day of introduction of the stamp into circulation the Post Office Torun 1 will be in use a special cancellation on which is presented a thaler from Torun with the heraldic arms from the reign of the king VLADISLAV IV.
