1000th anniversary of the coronation of Bolesław the Brave with a philatelic setting of Poczta Polska

This year, Poland celebrates the anniversary of one of the most important events in its history - the millennium of the coronation of the first Polish king Bolesław the Brave and the creation of the Kingdom of Poland. The Sejm of the Republic of Poland announced this year with the Millennium of the first two kings in Gniezno . Exhibitions, historical reconstructions and educational events take place throughout the country. Poczta Polska also joins the celebrations, presenting the occasional philatelic emission " 1000th anniversary of the coronation of Bolesław the Brave ".

The design of the stamp and collector's envelopes on the first day of circulation (FDC) used a fragment of the picture of Jan Matejko " Coronation of the First King of Poland 1001 ", from the collections of the National Museum in Warsaw. The reproduction was prepared by Piotr Ligier.

The composition is enriched by the crown of Bolesław the Brave and a decorative border by Bożydar Rozdeva, inspired by the aesthetics of medieval manuscripts. The crown motif also occurs on the date stamp, which ensures graphic consistency of all elements of the emission.

The collection is available in selected Poczta Polska outlets and in the online store Poczta Polska .

Coronation - the beginning of the Kingdom of Poland

Many historians interpret the meeting of Bolesław the Brave with Emperor Otton III in Gniezno during the so -called "Gniezno Congress" - during which the German ruler imposed a tiara on his temple - as an announcement of the upcoming coronation. Recognizing Bolesław as an ally and "Imperial Brother", Otton gave him the insignia of power - the spear of St. Maurycy. This event had a deep political and religious dimension, and its consequence was the creation of an archbishopric in Gniezno and bishoprics in Krakow, Wrocław and Kołobrzeg. It was a clear signal of recognition of the sovereignty of a young Polish state.

Although the planned coronation did not take place at the time because of the death of Otto III in 1002 and a change in the policy of the empire, the situation changed after the death of his successor Henry II and Pope Benedict VIII in 1024. The new Pope, Jan XIX, agreed to the coronation of Bolesław.

The ceremony took place on April 18, 1025, on Easter Sunday, in the Gniezno archcathedral. Bolesław was crowned and anointed with holy oils, becoming an anointed God and a full -fledged monarch, which still strengthened young Polish statehood.

King Bolesław died two months later - June 17, 1025. His work was continued by his son, Mieszko II, who was crowned in the same year, during Christmas.

The coronation of Bolesław the Brave was the formal recognition of Poland as a sovereign, Christian kingdom - independent of the empire and the German church hierarchy. She strengthened the authority of the royal power and initiated the centuries -old tradition of the coronation of Polish rulers.

Polish Post, through philatelic emissions, reminds of the importance of this historical moment, while popularizing knowledge about the history of Poland.
