The 160th anniversary of the January Uprising is the subject of a new issue of Poczta Polska
On January 20th of this year, a new postcard from Poczta Polska commemorating the heroes of the greatest Polish national uprising of the 19th century was presented in the 10th Pavilion of the Warsaw Citadel. The postcard was prepared in cooperation with the Museum of Independence.
The postcard was officially unveiled by Krzysztof Górski, Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Philately. He also read a letter from Krzysztof Falkowski, President of Poczta Polska, addressed to the participants of the commemorations.
" By sharing stories of heroic deeds through philatelic means, we want to educate the younger generation, promote patriotic attitudes, and a shared commitment to superior values. This is an important element of the mission that Poczta Polska has been pursuing for years, and whose fate has been inextricably linked with the history of our homeland for nearly five centuries, " emphasized Krzysztof Falkowski, President of Poczta Polska, in the letter.
The postcard features a painting titled "Farewell to Europe." The printed postage stamp features a work titled "Portrait of Helena Kirkorowa, née Majewski." Both works, by Aleksander Sochaczewski, constitute a painted diary documenting exile to Siberia after the January Uprising. This artist's works are considered a historical source of iconographic and documentary value. The paintings are the property of the Historical Museum of the Capital City of Warsaw and are a deposit of the Museum of Independence – Pavilion X of the Warsaw Citadel.
This is the second philatelic publication this year dedicated to the January Uprising. On January 19, the National Postal Operator introduced a postcard from the "160th Anniversary of the Battle of Węgrów" issue.
In the coming days, a third volume will also be published, devoted to the heroic figure of Stanisławów Brzóska, a clergyman, general and chief chaplain of the Podlaskie Voivodeship during the January Uprising.
