A stamp dedicated to Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński

Baczynski wwwThe Polish Post has introduced a stamp commemorating the life and work of Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński. The new issue will reach customers and philatelists on Friday, January 22nd, precisely on the 100th anniversary of the poet's birth.

The design's author, Jarosław Ochendzan, depicted Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński against a brick wall in the stamp. In addition to the stamp, Poczta Polska issued a limited edition First Day Delivery (FDC) envelope. It features a fragment of Baczyński's manuscript, "The Wedding of a Poet."

" Our latest philatelic issue commemorates a legendary figure – a poet considered one of the most outstanding artists of the war generation, who had and continues to have a profound influence on the artists of subsequent generations. Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński set an example that fighting for one's homeland is not only possible with a weapon in hand, but also with the power of words. On the 100th anniversary of the poet's birth, Poczta Polska, taking advantage of its educational mission, is introducing the "Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński" stamp into circulation. This multi-million-edition stamp will be distributed to post offices across Poland. I hope that this stamp is a symbol of presenting role models and honoring exceptional individuals and human endeavors, " says Wiesław Włodek, Vice President of Poczta Polska.

Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński was a Polish wartime poet, one of the most distinguished representatives of the so-called Columbus Generation (a literary generation encompassing Polish writers born around 1920, whose coming of age coincided with the years of World War II). He was a soldier in the Home Army and participated in the Warsaw Uprising, during which he was killed. Baczyński's work is characterized by a rapid pace of change – an evolving attitude toward reality, which entailed a shift in his repertoire of artistic means. During his 23-year life, which ended on the fourth day of the Warsaw Uprising, he composed over 500 poems, a dozen short stories, and several epic poems. His work, and his approach to life, continue to leave a mark on Polish culture today, both symbolically, nationally, and popularly. Baczyński's poetry has been used by popular musicians such as Janusz Radek, Michał Bajor, Ewa Demarczyk, Lao Che, Czesław Mozil, Mela Koteluk, and Budka Suflera.
