Henryk Arctowski, an outstanding polar explorer, on a new Polish Post stamp
July 15th marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Henryk Arctowski, a world-renowned scientist, explorer, and researcher whose achievements and scientific legacy have had an unquestionable impact on modern polar science. This eminent scientist is being honored with the Polish Post's newest stamp, scheduled for issue on his birthday.
The renowned polar explorer is featured in a five-stamp sheet with a tag. Designer Paweł Myszka depicted a portrait of Henryk Arctowski on the stamp, while the tag depicted the Belgian research vessel "Belgica," which carried the first expedition to explore Antarctica. The sheet's cover features geographical names commemorating Arctowski, a world-renowned scientist. The FDC (first day cover) depicts the research vessel "Belgica" on the shores of Antarctica between 1897 and 1899. The Belgian expedition, of which Arctowski was a member, is considered a milestone in the history of Antarctic expeditions. For the first time, it was proven that humans could survive the Antarctic winter, with its accompanying polar night. Thanks to year-long observations, geological samples, flora and fauna, maps, and photographs, detailed knowledge was gathered that was groundbreaking for further Antarctic research. The date stamp bears Henryk Arctowski's signature, the issue title, and the date of issue.
Henryk Arctowski is a distinguished scientist and university lecturer with many specializations. He is one of the world's leading polar researchers. Arctowski's research encompassed topics in geology, glaciology, meteorology, oceanography, atmospheric optics, and the aurora borealis phenomenon. He wrote over 400 scientific papers summarizing expeditions and the results of research conducted in Antarctica. In recognition of his achievements and contributions to science, in 1912 the Franciscan University in Lviv awarded Arctowski an honorary doctorate. In 1976, after Henryk Arctowski's death, a polar station was established in his honor in the South Shetland Islands. There are also peaks in Antarctica and Spitsbergen bearing his name.
