Leszno on 30 million stamps
Leszno is the next stamp in the "Polish Cities" philatelic series. The 3.30 złoty coin entered circulation on January 17 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the city's return to the Polish border.
As part of its philatelic issues, Poczta Polska honors the most important Polish heroes and the greatest events in our history, but also commemorates Polish cities and places.
Poland regained independence on November 11, 1918, but Leszno returned to Poland only under the Treaty of Versailles on January 17, 1920. The Polish Post's recently issued stamp in a series presenting Polish cities features a fragment of the Monument of Gratitude to the Greater Poland Insurgents against the backdrop of Leszno's town hall.
The seat of the Leszno municipal authorities is a 17th-century Baroque building (later destroyed by fire and rebuilt in the early 18th century). The architect of the three-story rectangular structure was the Italian Pompeo Ferrari. The insurgent monument was founded in 1924. In 1957, it was reconstructed and unveiled again. It is made of sandstone. On the front of the monument is an eagle and the date December 28, 1918. On the left is the inscription: "To the Greater Poland Insurgents 1918–1919," and on the right: "Grateful Compatriots 1924."
The stamp was issued in a circulation of 30 million pieces. In addition to the stamp, Poczta Polska is issuing an FDC (first day of circulation) envelope featuring the Leszno panorama.
So far, as part of its "Polish Cities" circulation series, Poczta Polska has presented Gniezno, Kraków, Warsaw, Kalisz, Płock, Toruń, Pułtusk (on an envelope with a printed postage mark), Kazimierz Dolny, Sandomierz, Gdańsk, Łódź (with a Priority tag), Poznań, Przemyśl, Szczecin, Sopot, Sieradz, Katowice, Częstochowa, Gorzów Wielkopolski, Chorzów, Racibórz, Jelenia Góra, Nowy Sącz, Żywiec, and Białystok. The series was initiated by graphic artist Andrzej Gosik, using watercolor techniques.
