Our Lady of the Election on a postage stamp
On Wednesday, December 8 this year, the Polish Post Office is introducing into circulation a postage stamp of the "Our Lady of the Election" issue.
The design's author, Bożydar Grozdew, depicted the Election of Our Lady on the stamp, a painting that traditionally accompanied the elections of Polish kings from Stefan Batory to Stanisław August Poniatowski. The painting currently resides in the Church of St. Stanislaus the Bishop and Martyr in Warsaw's Wola district.
" This time, we present on a stamp an image that is unique and has made a significant contribution to the history of our country. It was before Our Lady of Consolation that the nobility prayed when electing the kings of Poland, as did the newly elected kings. The image from the church in Warsaw's Wola district is both a witness to glorious events from our past and a guardian of their memory. It also teaches that even in difficult moments in life, one must remain faithful to tradition and values in one's choices, " says Wiesław Włodek, Vice President of the Management Board of Poczta Polska.
The FDC envelope features Bernardo Bellotto's painting "The Election of Stanisław August", the original of which is in the collection of the Royal Castle in Warsaw.
The painting of Our Lady of the Election (Our Lady of Consolation) was painted in 1621 by an unknown artist. It accompanied the royal elections in Warsaw.
