Water palaces on Polish and Thai postage stamps
On December 3rd, the Polish Post and the Thai Post officially introduced jointly issued stamps "50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Polish-Thai Diplomatic Relations" at the Royal Castle in Warsaw. The official ceremony began with the playing of the national anthems.
The ceremonial presentation was attended by Urasa Mongkolnavin – the ambassador of Thailand, Nattapong Suwanpakdee – the representative of the ambassador of Thailand to Poland and Krzysztof Górski – director of the Office of International Cooperation and Philately.
The issued stamps depict water palaces in Poland and Thailand, distinctive architectural structures that historically belonged to the royal families of both countries (in Poland and currently in Thailand). One stamp features a reproduction of a watercolor by Andrzej Gosik depicting Warsaw's Water Palace in the Royal Łazienki Park, while the other features a watercolor by Thaneth Ponchaiwong, a Thai painter who illustrated the Aisawanthipphaya-At Pavilion at the Bang Pa-In Royal Palace Complex, situated on the Chao Phraya River in the Bang Pa-in district of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, Thailand.
"50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Polish-Thai Diplomatic Relations" issue was designed by Mayuree Narknisorn. The First Day of Delivery envelope issued for the same issue features a reproduction of Raja Kunlai's watercolor painting, "Brama Tewa."
The author of the celebration logo, which is placed on the stamp sheet, is Surattanachai Chuenta.
" Joint stamp issues with other postal operators around the world are among the most rewarding projects that Poczta Polska can offer philatelists. In these thematically and technically diverse stamps, we showcase not only cultural, religious, and ethnic diversity, but above all, the beauty of the traditions, nature, and architecture of our partners in joint issues. Our latest stamps introduce Poles to a gem of Thai palace architecture, perhaps less known to Poles until now. I believe this combination with Warsaw's Łazienki Park will appeal to our customers, " says Krzysztof Górski, Director of the International Cooperation and Philately Office at Poczta Polska.
Official diplomatic relations between Poland and Thailand have existed for 50 years, but informal contacts between the two countries date back much longer. Some sources mention the first relations between the two countries dating back centuries. The joint philatelic issue commemorates the anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with a country with which Poland enjoys friendly relations. The issue is significant for Poczta Polska, which aims to strengthen its presence in the Asian philatelic market.
