Pieniny on new Polish Post stamps
As part of the latest installment of the "Beauty of Poland" series, Poczta Polska invites you to the picturesque Pieniny Mountains – a small but charming mountain range in the Carpathians. This is another installment in a series of stamps designed to highlight unique corners of our country, encourage visitors to visit them, and deepen their knowledge of local nature, history, and culture.
On April 30th, Poczta Polska is introducing six stamps with color photographs showcasing the beauty of these picturesque mountains. The series is complemented by three First Day Covers (FDC) with photographic motifs emphasizing the natural beauty and landscape of the region. These include images of a peregrine falcon, a panorama of the Three Crowns Mountains, showcasing the massif and surrounding valleys, and a view from Sokolica, featuring a distinctive pine tree on the cliff's edge. A commemorative date stamp, featuring regional decorative motifs, completes the collection.
The collection not only showcases the extraordinary landscapes of the Pieniny Mountains but also encourages exploration of their numerous attractions—from mountain trails and historic buildings to unique species of fauna and flora. The selected themes ensure that everyone—from nature lovers, families with children, and active recreation enthusiasts—will find something to enjoy.
Attractions shown on the stamps:
- Sokolica.
The first sign depicts Sokolica, the symbol of the Pieniny Mountains. A distinctive, solitary pine tree growing on the edge of a rocky ledge is eye-catching and one of the most recognizable viewpoints in the area. Several relict pine trees also grow on the summit, the oldest of which, according to research conducted in 1995–1996, were approximately 550 years old, making them the oldest pine trees in Poland. A short but steep trail leads to the summit (747 m above sea level), from where a breathtaking panorama of the Dunajec River Gorge unfolds. In good weather, you can also see the Tatra Mountains and Spisz. - Pieniny Mountains (Panorama)
The second sign presents a wide view of the gentle, rounded ridges of the Pieniny Mountains – a landscape full of pastel colors and soft lines. Numerous hiking trails allow you to explore the limestone rocks and gorges of Pieniny National Park, ideal for hiking and family trips. - The
third badge depicts the majestic Trzy Korony massif – the highest peak in the Pieniny Mountains (982 m above sea level). Five peaks, the most prominent of which, Okrąglica, boast a viewing platform, offer views of the Dunajec River, nearby mountain pastures, and even the distant peaks of the Tatra Mountains. A hike up Trzy Korony is, alongside a Dunajec River rafting trip, a must-see on any Pieniny Mountains trip. - The
fourth stamp depicts the Apollo Butterfly—the king of mountain meadows. Its white wings with red eyes are easily recognizable. It can be found from June to August in sunny meadows. Observing this rare species is a real treat for nature lovers and photographers. The Pieniny Mountains are one of the few places in Poland where it can still be seen. - River Gorge
– a picturesque rafting route winding along steep rock faces. Rafters entertain tourists by telling stories about local legends and ancient traditions. This is one of the greatest and most distinctive attractions of the Pieniny Mountains. - Czorsztyn Castle.
The final stamp depicts the ruins of Czorsztyn Castle – a 14th-century Gothic-Renaissance fortress located on Lake Czorsztyn. The castle once guarded the border and controlled the intersection of important trade routes leading to Hungary. The preserved towers and defensive walls allow visitors to experience the atmosphere of bygone times and admire views of the lake and the neighboring Niedzica Castle.
Stamps from the "Beauty of Poland – Pieniny" series will delight nature lovers, history enthusiasts, architecture enthusiasts, and landscape photographers alike. Last year, Poczta Polska issued a series promoting the attractions of the Świętokrzyskie Region, encouraging visitors to explore places such as the Ethnographic Park in Tokarnia, Sandomierz, and the Karczówka Nature Reserve. This year's collection continues this series, inviting you on another fascinating journey through Poland.
