Sales begin today at 12:00 PM, attracting the attention of both collectors and history buffs. The crypto stamp from the "230th Anniversary of the Kościuszko Insurrection" issue will debut on the philatelic market. This digital stamp commemorates one of the most important events in Polish history. It is the world's first non-perforated edition.
The virtual stamp design features Jan Matejko's famous painting "Kościuszko at Racławice" from 1888. The original can currently be admired in the collections of the National Museum in Krakow. The issue consists of a limited edition, available in two versions – perforated and imperforate – each in a strictly limited mintage of 2,000 pieces.
Another collector's item are the NFT Crypto Envelopes, available in two versions matching the perforations of the stamp. There are 600 pieces in total – 300 of each version! These rare digital works feature a fragment of Michał Stachowicz's painting depicting Tadeusz Kościuszko taking the oath in Krakow's Market Square in 1794. Additionally, each envelope has been hand-stamped with a Crypto Stamp, symbolically featuring peasant scythes – a symbol of the fight for freedom.
Historical background of the Kościuszko Uprising
The Kościuszko Uprising, which broke out in 1794, was a response to the Second Partition of Poland. Tadeusz Kościuszko assumed command of the uprising, seeking to unite the forces of the nobility, townspeople, and peasants in the fight for independence. Despite initial successes and the victorious Battle of Racławice, the military superiority of the occupying powers and their close cooperation ultimately thwarted the insurgents' chances. At the Battle of Maciejowice, Kościuszko was defeated, wounded, and captured. Warsaw, after the capture of Praga by Russian forces, capitulated on November 9, 1794.
The insurrection's failure sealed Poland's fate and led to its final partition. Despite its failure, the uprising gave rise to the idea of fighting to regain independence. The Połaniec Universal, proclaimed by the Commander, granted peasants personal freedom and indicated the need for social reforms. The insurrection marked the beginning of the construction of a modern Polish nation, composed not only of the nobility but also of townspeople and peasants, previously discriminated against in social rights.
