The Polish Post Office honors Leopold Tyrmand with a stamp

STAMP_100TH_ANNIVERSARY_OF_LEOPOLD_TYRMAND_3125X4300_txtThe Polish Parliament has declared 2020 the Year of Leopold Tyrmand. On May 16, Poczta Polska will introduce a stamp dedicated to the author of "Zły."

The design's author, Bożydar Grozdew, depicted Leopold Tyrmand on the stamp. The "100th Anniversary of Leopold Tyrmand's Birth" stamp was issued in a circulation of 144,000 copies and is available in a sheet of 12 stamps.

Leopold Tyrmand was a writer, journalist, and popularizer of jazz music in Poland. He was born on May 16, 1920, in Warsaw, and died on March 19, 1985, in Fort Myers, Florida. He was an icon of the Polish artistic world of the 1950s. His views and distinctive attire were associated with the bikini subculture—a movement in postwar Poland whose proponents criticized all centrally imposed norms and were fascinated by American culture and jazz music. In 1965, the writer emigrated to the United States, where he lived until his death. Tyrmand's greatest popularity came with his 1955 novel "Zły," in which he described the capital's underworld during the Stalinist era.

The Polish Post will once again commemorate an outstanding Polish artist with a publication. The "Polish Jazz Musicians" series includes stamps dedicated to Jerzy Milian and Jarek Śmietana. Last year, the Post issued a stamp commemorating the 150th anniversary of Stanisław Wyspiański's birth, and in 2017, it commemorated the 150th anniversary of Władysław Reymont's birth.
