The Polish Post paid tribute to the Warsaw Uprising Postmen

pp_4On Thursday, August 6, in Warsaw, representatives of the Polish Post Office honored the memory of the heroic postmen who served as field mail during the Warsaw Uprising.

A delegation from the Polish Post laid a wreath at the plaque commemorating the Warsaw Uprising Postmen, located in the building of the Warsaw 1 Post Office at 31/33 Świętokrzyska Street.

" The legacy left by the postal workers operating in the capital during the uprising is a source of pride for us; we want to cherish it and remind future generations. The Warsaw Uprising was the largest armed operation of the underground in German-occupied Europe, and the Field Post Office played an extremely important role in it. Young people involved in postal activities enabled communication for the capital's population, becoming messengers of hope, " said Tomasz Zdzikot, President of the Management Board of Poczta Polska.

Representatives of the Polish Post then paid tribute to the Scout Field Post's communications officers at a symbolic location at 41 Wilcza Street. This was the location of the Pasieka , or Grey Ranks Headquarters, where the field post began its operations.

Field Post – the heroic legacy of the Polish Post

The history of the Scout Field Post (HPP) is closely linked to the activities of the Home Army Field Post (PP AK). Clandestine communications within the Underground State were among the most extensive among the underground organizations in occupied Europe. Organizational work to establish the HPP in its first branch at 41 Wilcza Street began on August 2, 1944. However, the official launch of operations took place on Sunday, August 6.

Young men from the Grey Ranks provided communications in Warsaw during the uprising. The entire content of correspondence could not exceed 25 words per letter . It is estimated that postmen carried 200,000 pieces of mail during the Warsaw Uprising.

On October 3, 1944, the last roll call of the Scout Post took place at the Pasieka at 41 Wilcza Street. The Uprising collapsed, and the insurgent field post ceased its operations.
