PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe SA (PKP Polish Railway Lines) has summarized a year of yellow stickers at track and road intersections. Marking 14,000 crossings with yellow stickers featuring life-saving information is yielding results. Over the past year, train service was suspended or restricted 165 times following a call with the crossing number, indicating a life-threatening situation, potential for tragedy, loss, or transportation disruption.
Thanks to the yellow sticker, operators of the 112 emergency number have received over 800 calls since June 2018. In 78 cases, thanks to the special rapid connection, train traffic on the railway line was stopped, help was summoned, and a tragedy was averted. In 87 cases, train service was restricted to ensure the safety of passengers and users of level crossings.
In all cases – accidents, collisions, and vandalism at railway crossings – knowledge of the location of the incident is crucial, essential for reporting the incident by dialing 112, calling an ambulance or the police, or informing the PKP dispatcher. This is achieved through stickers that PKP is gradually marking all its own rail-road crossings. These stickers include individual crossing identification numbers and the emergency telephone number, which can be easily forgotten in stressful situations.
The yellow stickers, which are also intended to reduce the number of accidents and effectively address their consequences, are another initiative conducted by PKP as part of its "Safe Crossing" social campaign, which has been ongoing for over a decade. The campaign involves a range of activities aimed at drivers, driving instructors, and pedestrians (children, youth, and adults), including training sessions, seminars, accident simulations, competitions, events, lectures for children, field patrols by the Railway Protection Guard, and preventative and informational campaigns at level crossings and so-called "wild crossings." Informational materials are also distributed and a media campaign is underway. Poczta Polska (Polish Post) is also participating in communication activities promoting the campaign and raising awareness among Poles about safety on railway premises.
