Poczta Polska is testing LNG-powered cars
A Scania LNG-powered tractor unit is being tested by Polish Post employees on the Lublin-Warsaw-Lublin route. This is the next step in the implementation of the national operator's low-emission fleet replacement program.
The vehicle tested by Poczta Polska is a new-generation Scania R410 tractor unit powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The performance and characteristics of its 13-liter engine are those expected from a modern diesel engine of the same power output. However, the use of natural gas reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 10 percent. Furthermore, LNG-powered vehicles emit toxic nitrogen oxides by over 60 percent compared to diesel-powered vehicles. Furthermore, the properties of natural gas enable the complete elimination of particulate matter emissions. The tractor unit is equipped with the Scania Opticruise automated gearbox, which ensures smooth and quick gear changes and the highest level of driver comfort. The range of a typical Scania LNG-powered tractor unit on flat terrain is up to 1,300 km.
For over a year, Poczta Polska has been conducting the largest tests of alternative fuel vehicles in Poland. Last year, it tested electric vehicles up to 3.5 tons with a payload of up to 800 kg. This fall, dozens of such vehicles will join the postal fleet. This year, electric delivery vans from several brands with payloads exceeding 800 kg were tested. Tests of another LNG-powered vehicle are also planned.
