The Polish Post Office honored the distinguished Kraków Tęczyński family

PrintingTo celebrate the 700th anniversary of the founding of the village of Tenczynek near Kraków, Poczta Polska (Polish Post) is presenting a new stamp commemorating the distinguished Tęczyński family of Małopolska. The philatelic stamp, valued at 3.30 złoty, has a circulation of 150,000 copies. It enters circulation on June 28, 2019.

The stamp features the Topór coat of arms, which the Tęczyński family has used since medieval times. The coat of arms features a battle axe with a gold handle on a red background. Along the top edge of the stamp is a stylized inscription: Ród Tęczyński (Tęczyński Family).

The Tęczyński family, bearing the Topór coat of arms, is considered the oldest and most distinguished of Polish knights. They were among the architects of the Polish political scene in the 14th and 15th centuries, securing them a place among the country's elite. The castellan of Kraków, Jan of Tęczyna, was one of the four wealthiest magnates in the entire country – his estates included three castles, two towns, 35 villages, lead mines, and two manors in Kraków. The Tęczyńskis contributed to the evolution of medieval magnates into modern aristocracy. The family seat was Tenczyn Castle in Rudno, the ruins of which can still be visited today.
