The Polish Post Office commemorated the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Zamość Uprising
On November 20th of this year, central commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Zamość Uprising took place. It was the largest act of organized resistance by Poles, in terms of territory, who took up arms against the policies of the Third German Reich.
The highlight of the commemorations of the outbreak of the Zamość Uprising was the Remembrance Roll Call, held at Marshal Józef Piłsudski Square in Warsaw. During the roll call, representatives of the highest state authorities, central offices, public institutions, associations, and numerous residents of the capital paid tribute to those who died. The Polish Post was represented by Krzysztof Falkowski, President of the Polish Post, and Krzysztof Górski, Director of the Bureau of International Cooperation and Philately, who jointly laid wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
During the anniversary celebrations of the Zamość Uprising, Krzysztof Falkowski, President of Poczta Polska, presented a postcard issued for this occasion with a printed postage mark entitled "80th Anniversary of the Outbreak of the Zamość Uprising".
" Polish Post has been an institution inextricably linked to the fate of our country for nearly five centuries. We are carrying out a mission to popularize knowledge about figures and events important to our homeland. The heroic uprising and organized resistance of the inhabitants of the Zamość region against the barbaric policies of the German occupier deserves to be commemorated," says Krzysztof Falkowski, President of Poczta Polska. "I believe that the postcard issued by our company will contribute to perpetuating in the memory of contemporary Poles the knowledge of the sacrifice and heroism of the inhabitants of the Zamość region, who decided to fight an unequal battle to defend what was most precious. It is thanks to THEM that we, too, can today enjoy the opportunity to live in a free and independent Poland," adds the President of Poczta Polska.
The illustrative section of the white and red card features a historical photograph of the 9th Infantry Regiment of the Zamość Region Army and the inscription "80th Anniversary of the Outbreak of the Zamość Uprising." In the upper right corner of the address side of the card is a postage stamp depicting the badge of the 9th Infantry Regiment of the Zamość Region Home Army 1939–1944. Above, along the top edge, is the inscription "POLSKA" and the value designation: A.
The organizers of the Zamość Uprising commemorations were Minister Jan Józef Kasprzyk – Head of the Office for War Veterans and Victims of Oppression and MP Sławomir Zawiślak – President of the World Association of Home Army Soldiers, Zamość District.
In December 1942, the Zamość Region Uprising broke out as a response by Polish underground organizations to the Third German Reich's operation of expelling the Polish population and resettling German settlers. Soldiers of the Home Army and Peasant Battalions took up arms against the occupiers. Fierce fighting continued in numerous locations, including Wojda, Zaboreczno, Róża, and Osuchy. The Polish victory in the Battle of Zaboreczno surprised the Germans, and as a result, the occupiers discontinued the expulsion operations in the Zamość region.
