The Polish Post Office issued a stamp commemorating the Silesian Uprisings

envelope_previewOn August 20th of this year, a postage stamp from the "Silesian Uprisings" issue will enter circulation. This is another issue in the series dedicated to the independence uprisings in Silesia. Last year, Poczta Polska issued a stamp dedicated to the First Silesian Uprising.

" The Silesian Uprisings are an important part of Poland's independence history. Through postage stamps, we want to pay tribute to the heroes who fought to reunite Silesia with the reborn Poland. Poczta Polska commemorated the centenary of the first Silesian Uprising a year ago, and we are continuing this philatelic series by issuing another stamp. This year's issue focuses on the events of 1920 and honors the second Silesian uprising, " says Tomasz Zdzikot, President of the Management Board of Poczta Polska.

The stamp's designer, Adam Kultys, depicted doctor Andrzej Mielęcki, who was beaten by Germans supported by the Security Police (Sicherheitspolizei – Sipo) on August 17, 1920. These events became the direct cause of the Second Silesian Uprising, which began three days later, on the night of August 19-20. Alongside Dr. Andrzej Mielęcki, the stamp also features a map marking the locations where the insurgents fought.

The materials used to create the entire issue were shared with and consulted with the Silesian Uprisings Museum in Świętochłowice. The graphics used on the stamps depict local heroes and explore lesser-known figures from these events.
