Polish Post: stamp for the 80th anniversary of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University

To mark the 80th anniversary of the establishment of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, Poczta Polska has issued a commemorative stamp to honor the university's anniversary celebrations. The stamp premiered during the inauguration of the International Maria Curie-Skłodowska Congress "Innovation is a Woman. Science – Business – Education." The issue also includes a special treat for collectors: stamps with a first-day postmark and a First Day Envelope (FDC)..
The stamp features the main building of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS) with a distinctive view of the campus, and in the background is an image of Maria Curie-Skłodowska, the university's patron. The design combines modern styling with the university's academic heritage. The First Day of Circulation Envelope (FDC) depicts the monumental statue of Maria Curie-Skłodowska, which has stood at the heart of the UMCS campus since 1964. The statue, created by sculptor Marian Konieczny, has become one of the university's most recognizable emblems. The envelope is minimalist in style, in dark shades of blue, complemented by gold accents symbolizing the light of science. A commemorative date stamp with a stylized image of the patron saint complements the design.
(UMCS)
was established on October 23, 1944, by decree of the Polish Committee of National Liberation (PKWN). Professor Henryk Raabe became its first rector. The university's early days were difficult – lacking lecture halls, equipment, and basic facilities. The first classes were held in the building of the Staszic State Gymnasium, and due to a lack of furniture, participants in the first meeting of professors and assistants on October 25, 1944, had to sit on barrels. At this meeting, the first university authorities were formed. Initially, UMCS consisted of four faculties: Natural Sciences (later transformed into the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences), Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, and Medicine. Today, UMCS is one of the most important universities in Poland. It offers nearly 90 fields of study and educates approximately 16,000 students. It offers over 300 specializations, and over 267,000 graduates have graduated from the university to date. The university is developing dynamically, and students are actively involved in 120 research groups.
