We present a unique stamp on the occasion of Stanisław Lem's 100th birthday.
On Sunday, September 12 this year, Poczta Polska introduced into circulation a postage stamp, an FDC envelope and an issue date stamp "100th anniversary of the birth of Stanisław Lem".
The design's author, Bożydar Grozdew, presented a portrait photograph of the subject of the latest issue – the eminent writer, futurologist, and philosopher Stanisław Lem. The photograph on the stamp was taken in 1973 using Bolesław Lutosławski's camera. The stamp sheet was issued in the rare tête-bêche format, sought after by philatelists, where the stamps are reversed.
The FDC (first day of circulation) envelope features a futuristic city with pen nibs flying over it, capturing the spirit of the writer's work.
" Stanisław Lem is a figure recognized worldwide. The books of this outstanding futurologist and fantasy writer have been translated into over 40 languages and published in an impressive 30 million copies. The originality and innovation of Lem's works are reflected in our stamps, published in a futuristic and somewhat subversive style. We believe that due to the small circulation and unique design, the stamp will certainly appeal to philatelists and fans of Stanisław Lem's literary legacy, " said Tomasz Zdzikot, President of the Management Board of Poczta Polska.
Stanisław Lem was a distinguished writer whose works focused primarily on technology and science, seeking to define humanity's place in the universe. He is the most frequently translated Polish author. His best-known books include "Solaris," "The Astronauts," and "Fables for Robots."
" 2021 has been declared by the Polish Parliament as the Year of Stanisław Lem. September 12, 2021, would have been the writer's 100th birthday. On this occasion, Poczta Polska honored the most outstanding representative of Polish fantasy and one of the most widely read science fiction writers in the world. Stanisław Lem thus joined the ranks of outstanding Poles in its postage stamp collection, " noted Wiesław Włodek, Vice President of Poczta Polska.
The Polish Post, paying tribute to the extraordinary work of Stanisław Lem, is not stopping at introducing a postage stamp and an FDC envelope into circulation on September 12th. An additional philatelic asset will soon be presented in the form of a so-called new print, containing elements visible only under UV light.
