Birds of Polish parks again on Polish Post stamps
On February 28, the Warsaw Zoo hosted the premiere of four postage stamps from the "Birds of Polish Parks" issue. These new releases showcase bird species found in Polish landscape, national, and urban parks.
Colorful images of the starling, hawfinch, robin, and yellowhammer are featured on this year's postage stamp designs. The photographs of the protagonists of the nature issue were taken by Maciej Zdziarski, a journalist, photographer, and bird enthusiast. The birds were captured on camera in Polish city parks.
The official presentation of the stamps took place at the Warsaw Zoo. The stamps were unveiled by Dr. Andrzej G. Kruszewicz, Director of the Warsaw Zoo, Wiesław Włodek, Vice President of the Polish Post, and Maciej Zdziarski, who photographed the stamps.
Characteristic bird calls of this year's broadcast
Starlings' songs not only incorporate the melodies of other birds they have heard, but they can also imitate sounds such as cell phone ringing, kettle whistles, dogs barking, and even human conversations.
The robin's call is pearly and has been compared to the sound of pearls scattered on glass. The males' melody is barely audible. Juveniles are considered the loudest.
The yellowhammer's song consists of several short, rapidly successive notes and one long one. Its voice inspired Ludwig van Beethoven to write his famous Fifth Symphony.
The hawfinch's call is a chirping sound, reminiscent of the robin and yellowhammer. It sometimes diversifies its song with whistles and ends with more melodic tones.
The Polish Post Office promotes Polish fauna
In 2022, Poczta Polska introduced the first stamps from the "Birds of Polish Parks" issue, depicting a nuthatch, a sparrow, a great tit, and a blue tit . That same year, the company also issued stamps in a joint issue with the Argentine Post. These stamps depict birds found only in two regions: the Polish Crested Tit in Europe and the Argentine Rufous-crested Pochard in South America.
The first two issues of the "Polish Birds" issue included stamps in block form, depicting the Common Kingfisher in 2014, and the White Stork, Black Stork, Great Egret, and Grey Owl in 2019. In 2015 and 2017, stamps featuring eight species of native owls entered circulation, including the Eurasian Eagle Owl, Barn Owl, Great Grey Owl, and Long-eared Owl. In 2019, a stamp from the "Europa" issue featuring the Common Chaffinch entered circulation. That same year, stamps created in collaboration with Singapore Post were also released. The stamps depict birds native to both countries: the white-bellied hornbill and the peregrine falcon.
The substantive consultant for the "Birds of Polish Parks" issue is Dr. Andrzej Kruszewicz.
