We commemorated the Gdańsk Postmen on the anniversary of the outbreak of World War II
As every year, the Company commemorated the Gdańsk Postmen who, 82 years ago, undertook a heroic fight to maintain the redoubt of Polishness in the Free City – the Gdańsk 1 Post Office building. For the first time, the celebrations took place in two locations and were linked by the presentation of commemorative items introduced into circulation on that day.
This year's commemorations of the German aggression against Poland and the heroic defense of the Gdańsk 1 Post Office building were exceptional, thanks to the cooperation between the Company and the National Bank of Poland. For the first time in history, a postage stamp and a collector coin were simultaneously introduced into circulation, under the joint issue name "Defense of the Polish Post Office in Gdańsk. German Aggression on Poland." Both stamps feature images of leading figures involved in the defense of the Gdańsk Post Office: Dr. Jan Michoń, Alfons Flisykowski, and Second Lieutenant Konrad Guderski, against the background of the main entrance to the historic building. The postage stamp, commemorating the postal heroes, was issued in a circulation of 168,000.
The ceremonial presentations of the securities took place in two locations. In Warsaw, at the NBP Money Centre, the conference was attended by the President of Poczta Polska, Tomasz Zdzikot, and Professor Adam Glapiński, President of the National Bank of Poland. At the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk, the company was represented by its vice-presidents: Wiesław Włodek, Krzysztof Falkowski, Mateusz Wodejko, and Andrzej Bodziony. Following the presentation of the securities, representatives of the management board participated in the official opening of the commemorative exhibition entitled "Defense of the Polish Post Office in Gdańsk. German Aggression on Poland," which has been on display since yesterday in front of the entrance to the building and in the lobby of the Gdańsk 1 Post Office. Following the official part of the ceremony, the company's vice-presidents laid a wreath at the Monument to the Defenders of the Polish Post Office.
The Gdańsk commemorations of the anniversary of the Nazi invasion of Poland, like last year, culminated with the illumination of the historic UP 1 building, where Poles heroically defended themselves for 14 hours 82 years ago. Red and white neon signs and the inscription "We Remember 1 September 1939" illuminated the façade of the historic Polish Post Office building in Gdańsk from 8:00 PM on September 1st until 6:00 AM on September 2nd.
The exhibition dedicated to the heroism of Polish postmen and the events initiated by the Nazi attack on Poland on September 1st can also be seen in Bydgoszcz, in the hall of Post Office 1, during office hours.
