Ceremonial presentation of the postcard from the issue "160th anniversary of the Battle of Węgrów"
The President and Vice President of the Polish Post, at the invitation of Węgrów local government officials, participated in the commemoration of the anniversary of the Battle of Węgrów. This was one of the most famous battles during the January Uprising, which was the last and largest armed uprising of the Polish nation before regaining independence in 1918.
The 160th anniversary of the Battle of Węgrów was commemorated on January 19th of this year in the courtyard of the Cultural Dialogue Center in Węgrów. To mark the occasion, the Polish Post introduced a postcard with a pre-printed postage stamp, commemorating the Polish patriots who participated in the battle that took place in these lands in 1863.
" awareness , shaped by the shared historical fate of a nation, is a prerequisite for the sustainable functioning of any society. Through the unique philatelic issue "160th Anniversary of the Battle of Węgrów," the Polish Post wishes to commemorate those patriots who, demonstrating immense courage and bravery, defied Russian rule. Our publication is also a symbolic expression of appreciation and gratitude to our ancestors who fought for the sovereignty of our homeland at a time when this vision seemed exceptionally distant," emphasized Krzysztof Falkowski, President of Poczta Polska.
The enlarged postcard was unveiled by the Senator of the Republic of Poland Maria Koc, the President of Poczta Polska Krzysztof Falkowski, the Starost of Węgrów Ewa Besztak and Leszek Redosz – Chairman of the Węgrów County Council.
In the upper right corner of the address side of the card, a postage stamp is printed, along with a photograph of the grave of January Uprising insurgents who died in the Battle of Węgrów. On the left is Maksymilian Oborski's watercolor "Janko Sokół." The illustrative portion of the card features an anonymous Viennese lithograph, "The Battle of Węgrów."
Polish Post, honoring Polish heroes who participated in the 1863 independence uprising, is issuing three postcards this year with a printed postage stamp. In addition to the "160th Anniversary of the Battle of Węgrów" issue, the company will also present the "160th Anniversary of the January Uprising" publication. The company will also commemorate Stanisław Brzóska – a Polish priest, general, and chief chaplain of the Podlaskie Voivodeship during the 1863 Uprising.
These are not the first Polish Post issues honoring the armed struggle of Poles for the freedom and sovereignty of their homeland. Among the many recent issues, it is worth recalling items dedicated to, among others, the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Zamość Uprising, the 78th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, and the 40th anniversary of the Gorzów August.
