In tribute to the heroes – the Polish Post commemorated the Warsaw Ghetto insurgents

On April 19, the Polish Post introduced a commemorative stamp honoring the heroic deeds of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising participants. This latest philatelic item recognizes the heroism and steadfastness of Jewish militant organizations that undertook an unequal fight against the German oppressor.

Roch Stefaniak, the stamp's designer, used the Star of David in the graphic. It is one of the most important symbols of the Jewish people and the State of Israel. Jews confined to the Warsaw Ghetto were forced to wear armbands with the Star. This marking was intended to stigmatize individuals and was also associated with social exclusion, sanctioned by the laws introduced by the occupiers.

This year's issue is complemented by a first day of circulation (FDC) envelope, in the background of which appears a fragment of a photograph of the headquarters of the Warsaw Ghetto Museum, which is currently being built.

A symbol of Polish Jews' resistance to the Holocaust

In 1940, the Germans established a ghetto in Warsaw, which became a place of suffering and extermination for over 420,000 Jews. Deportations to extermination camps began in 1942. In just two months, approximately 270,000 people perished. In the wake of this tragedy, underground organizations were formed – the Jewish Combat Organization and the Jewish Military Union. In April 1943, the Jewish population launched the largest armed uprising of World War II. The fighters perished, but their struggle remains a symbol of heroism and sacrifice.

The Polish Post Office remembers the heroism of the victims of the Warsaw Ghetto

On the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, Poczta Polska (Polish Post) commemorated the anniversary with a special issue of a commemorative stamp featuring a yellow daffodil. The collection dedicated to the commemorations was designed by visual artist Marzanna Dąbrowska, based on the logo design by Helena Czernek and Klara Jankiewicz.

The issue honoring the 75th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, Poczta Polska, consisted of a special postcard featuring an illustration of Artur Szyk's painting "We, the People, Samson in the Ghetto" from 1945.

In 2021, Poczta Polska introduced a philatelic issue commemorating Marek Edelman, a doctor, outstanding social activist and one of the leaders of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, who defended the right to freedom and respect for human dignity with dedication and great commitment.
