A unique stamp for the Olympic Games
The Polish Post has introduced a postage stamp from the "Games of the XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020" issue. A circulation of 144,000 stamps was distributed to post offices across the country.
The design's author, Jan Konarzewski, symbolically depicted three Olympic sports on the stamp: volleyball, track and field, and rowing. In addition to the stamp, Poczta Polska issued an FDC (first day of circulation) envelope, featuring a silhouette of a runner against the background of the symbols of Japan, the host of this year's Olympics.
The opening ceremony of the Tokyo Games will take place on July 23rd (sports competition will begin on July 21st, when the first matches in the soccer and softball tournaments will be played). During this year's Olympics, participants will compete in 37 disciplines. For the first time, athletes from karate, surfing, skateboarding, sport climbing, and street basketball (3x3) will compete for Olympic medals.
The IOC and Japanese authorities postponed the Games from 2020 to 2021 (while retaining the event's original name). The reason for this decision was the coronavirus pandemic.
Our country will be represented at this year's Olympics by 211 athletes in 28 disciplines.
We keep our fingers crossed for the white and reds!
