XXIV Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022 on a postage stamp
The Polish Post has introduced a postage stamp from the "XXIV Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022" issue. The stamp, with a circulation of 144,000, was delivered to post offices across the country today.
Designer Jan Konarzewski depicted a symbolic ski trail in the center of the stamp, with the Polish Olympic Committee logo next to it. In addition to the stamp, Poczta Polska issued a First Day of Delivery (FDC) envelope, which, alongside the ski trail, featured the symbols of seven Olympic gold medals – all won by Polish athletes in the 23 Winter Olympic Games.
" For many years, Poczta Polska has accompanied all Olympic Games with its stamps. We promote both summer and winter competitions, always supporting our athletes. This latest stamp symbolically showcases the currently most popular winter sport among fans – ski jumping. Its innovative character and simple, clean graphics commemorate the 50th anniversary of Wojciech Fortuna winning the first Polish ski jumping gold medal in Sapporo. It is a great honor to once again accompany Polish Olympians in their competition in Beijing. We are also delighted that our stamp will join several previous ones honoring Polish ski jumpers in many philatelic folders, " says Wiesław Włodek, Vice President of Poczta Polska.
The Beijing Winter Games will take place from February 4-20, 2022. The best athletes from around the world will compete in 109 events (15 disciplines). The Olympic competition will take place in 12 arenas. The race for qualification for the Beijing Olympics in individual winter sports is still underway.
Polish representatives have been competing in the Winter Olympics since 1924, the first historic competition in Chamonix. Although seven Poles traveled to France that year, none of them managed to reach the podium. The number of Polish athletes grew from one Olympic to the next, but Poland still lacked a medal. The first medal was to be won by Franciszek Gąsienica Groń, a Nordic combined athlete, for a further 32 years. The bronze medal was won by ski jumper Wojciech Fortuna, who was the first Polish winter Olympic athlete to win it in 1972 in Sapporo.
We keep our fingers crossed for the white and reds!
