A postage stamp commemorating the adoption of the Constitution of May 3

230th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of May 3rd_envelope_162x114Monday, May 3rd, marks the anniversary of the adoption of the oldest constitution in Europe. To mark this occasion, Poczta Polska will introduce a postage stamp from the "230th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Constitution of May 3rd" issue.

Designer Jan Konarzewski depicted a fragment of Jan Matejko's painting "The Constitution of May 3, 1791" on the stamp, from the collection of the Royal Castle Museum in Warsaw. In addition to the stamp, Poczta Polska issued a limited edition First Day of Circulation (FDC) envelope. It depicts individual frames from the painting used to create this latest philatelic item.

" The stamp commemorating the 230th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of May 3rd was developed in cooperation with the Royal Castle, based on a scene from a famous painting by master Jan Matejko. Recalling the most important events in the history of Poland and Poles is the responsibility of the National Postal Operator, which our company proudly fulfills, " said Tomasz Zdzikot, President of the Management Board of Poczta Polska.

The Constitution of May 3rd was adopted in 1791 by the Four-Year Sejm. It was the first modern, written constitution in Europe and the second in the world (after the American Constitution of 1787). It adopted Montesquieu's division of powers and abolished, among other things, free elections and the liberum veto. It established a constitutional monarchy in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Let us recall that in 2019, the Company introduced a postage stamp commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Royal Castle in Warsaw – the place where the Constitution of May 3 was adopted.
