A stamp dedicated to Poles who saved Jews
"Poles Saving Jews" is the latest issue from Poczta Polska. The 3.30 złoty stamp will enter circulation on March 24th in a limited edition of 120,000.
The design's author, Jarosław Ochendzan, depicted Edward Raczyński, then Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Polish Government in Exile (and President of the Republic of Poland in Exile from 1979), on the stamp, against the background of the so-called Raczyński Note of December 10, 1942. In the lower right corner is the value: 3.30 złoty and the inscription: POLAND. In the lower left corner is the inscription: POLES SAVING JEWS EDWARD RACZYŃSKI.
Raczyński's note was the first official Holocaust report informing Western public opinion about the crimes. It was also the first official statement by a government in defense of all Jews persecuted by Nazi Germany—not just citizens of their own country.
In honor of March 24th, the National Day of Remembrance of Poles Who Saved Jews under German Occupation, Poczta Polska has decided to issue a stamp commemorating all those who, through their heroism and selfless willingness to help others, contributed to the saving of even a single member of the Jewish community. Poles who saved Jews were, are, and should be role models and inspirations – not only the nearly 7,000 heroes known by name and commemorated by Israel's Yad Vashem Institute. They also include thousands of compatriots who remain anonymous or have not received this distinction.
