A stamp commemorating a great man and one of the leaders of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
On Sunday, January 2, 2022, Poczta Polska will introduce a philatelic issue commemorating Marek Edelman, a doctor, outstanding social activist and one of the leaders of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
The Warsaw Ghetto existed from November 1940 to May 1943. It was the largest ghetto in occupied Poland at the time, covering an area of approximately 300 hectares in the capital. Approximately 400,000 Jews lived in abject poverty and inhumane conditions.
Marek Edelman is inextricably linked to the history of Warsaw. This outstanding social activist and one of the leaders of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising defended the right to freedom and respect for human dignity with dedication and great commitment.
The stamp's design, created by Jarosław Ochendzan, combines the informal figure of Marek Edelman with a discreetly contrasting background. The stamp is faceless, with a value equivalent to the fee for a domestic unregistered priority letter, format S. According to the price list for universal services in domestic and international circulation, from January 1, 2022, this will be PLN 4.50.
The FDC envelope (first day of circulation envelope) depicts the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes in Warsaw's Muranów district – a symbol of the city close to every Varsovian, directly linked to the activities of Marek Edelman.
